MEDICARE

Medicare Advantage

An all-in-one plan that takes the place of Original Medicare — usually with prescription coverage and extra benefits built in.

How it works

You keep Medicare, but a private insurance company handles your coverage. Your medical benefits and, in most plans, your prescriptions come together on one card. Many plans also include dental, vision, and hearing, and some add things like fitness memberships or an over-the-counter allowance.

What it costs

Monthly premiums are often low, and in many areas there are $0 premium plans. Instead of paying a larger premium every month, you pay copays as you use care, up to a yearly maximum the plan sets. That cap is worth knowing before you enroll, and it is one of the first things we go over.

The part people miss

These plans use networks. If a doctor you want to keep is not in the plan, you find out at the worst possible moment. Before you sign anything, we check your doctors and your medications against the plans available where you live — that one step prevents most of the regret we hear about.

Who it usually fits

People who want a low monthly premium, are comfortable using a network, and like having everything in one plan. If you travel often or see specialists out of state, a Supplement may serve you better — we will tell you straight either way.
