MEDICARE

Medicare Supplement

Also called Medigap. It works alongside Original Medicare and picks up most of what Medicare leaves for you to pay.

How it works

Original Medicare pays its share of a bill and leaves you the rest — deductibles and the 20% coinsurance that has no ceiling. A Supplement fills in that gap. Plans come in standardized letters, so a Plan G from one company covers exactly what a Plan G from another covers. What differs is the price and the company behind it.

What it costs

You pay a monthly premium, higher than most Advantage plans, and then very little when you actually receive care. Premiums vary by company for identical coverage, which is where an independent agency earns its keep — we compare the same plan letter across companies and show you the difference.

Any doctor that takes Medicare

No networks and no referrals. If a provider accepts Medicare, your Supplement works there — anywhere in the country. That is the main reason people who travel, split the year between two states, or want a specific specialist choose this route.

Two things worth knowing

Prescriptions are not included, so you add a separate Part D plan. And when you first become eligible you generally cannot be turned down for health reasons — later on, that can change. Timing matters here more than with any other plan type, so it is worth a phone call before your window closes.
